What Are You Worth?

Untangling Net Worth from Self-Worth

The real measure of wealth is how much you’d be worth if you lost all your money. —Anonymous

It may seem easier to measure our worth by what we have instead of who we are. We can clearly see what is in our bank account (or not), the material possessions that surround us, and the labels we wear.

Net worth is easier to measure perhaps, but that is not what makes us worthy.  Do not measure your self-worth by your net worth.  There is no value in life except what you choose to place upon it and no happiness in any place except what you bring to it yourself.

Net worth shrinks but self-worth grows as you give. Our capacity for loving people, animals and the world can’t be put in a box or on a spreadsheet. It can’t be measured. It can’t be contained.

Our personal balance sheet has a lot to do with returning to our core values to enhance our sense of self worth. Your personal balance sheet has a lot to do with having a good value system. Each time you act in accordance with your core values, you essentially make deposits in your “personal integrity account.”  This reflects the amount of trust you have in your relationship with your authentic self.

In chapter 11 of Igniting Your True Purpose and Passion, Fried provides a roadmap with specific action steps, so you can live up to your core values, are focused and have a clearer sense of purpose. When our outer life is aligned with our inner feelings, we put ourselves in a better position to make a contribution to the world.
